Science on the Rocks - Science of Spirits: Craft Cocktails

The Science of Spirits: Craft Cocktails
Learn About Libations at the Fleet’s Signature Science and Social Event Thursday, October 16, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The Fleet has discovered the scientific formula for a perfect night out: Take one part fun with friends and slowly mix in two parts intriguing interaction. Then add a scoop of nibbles and a cup of libations. Cover all ingredients with music and laughter. Let it simmer to perfection. And voilĂ ! You have Science on the Rocks—a delightful evening of unexpected activities, delicious tastes and indulgent experiences for adults ages 21 and up. Science on the Rocks is held on select Thursday evenings, and each event features a unique theme.
This October, Science on the Rocks is stirring up the fun at our next party, The Science of Spirits: Craft Cocktails. We’ll tantalize guests with sips and stories from San Diego's best bartenders and reveal the chemistry behind popular whistle-wetters. Partygoers will enjoy sweet and savory food and drink samples, intriguing science activities and fascinating chats with experts.
Scientists will be on hand to present fun science-based activities for attendees to engage with between libations, prominent members of the craft cocktail community will be giving informative talks and music will be provided by Engage Drumbeats by DRE, featuring a DJ with live drums. Plus, all Fleet galleries will be open for guest to explore.
The informative activities and talks include:

·         You Want Proof?!
If a whiskey is 90 proof, what does that mean? Local scientists explain the truth about proof.
·         Who Are You Calling Dense?

Beautification at the Fleet!

Change is afoot at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center … and underfoot! We’re installing new carpeting in the exhibit galleries, and we've just opened  our new exhibition, ILLUSION: Nothing Is As It Seems, which made its North American premiere on May 10. To accommodate these improvements, we’ll be moving many exhibits to new locations within the science center. Please note On The Fly and Guitar: The Instrument that Rocked the World have left the building, however all your other favorite exhibits have simply been shuffled around a bit! If you have trouble finding your favorite interactive exhibit, please ask a friendly gallery facilitator for help. Thank you for your patience as we create a more fantastic Fleet experience!

Concert Schedule

Friday, January 17: Common Sense with special guest Michael Tiernan
When it comes to rocking reggae with a southern California vibe, Common Sense stands alone. They've created their own style. And if you’re ready to have a good time, Common Sense is ready to accommodate. Reggae-rock guitar is the best way to kick off the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center’s Rock in the Park concert series!

Friday, February 7: Paul Cannon with special guest Michael Tiernan
He's homegrown, and he’s the real deal. Paul Cannon brings a cool, peaceful vibe that will have you grooving along with your friends like you’re at a bonfire on a San Diego beach. His song "Homegrown" was the most played song by any local artist in San Diego last year, and it was even chosen by the San Diego Padres as a theme song for the home team. Paul Cannon and his band deliver guitar-driven melodies and catchy lyrical hooks that will have you singing along.
Friday, February 21: To Be Announced
Friday, March 7: Venice with special guest Michael Tiernan
You can't leave a concert by Venice without saying WOW. In an age of "auto-tuned superstars," these four vocalists blend perfect harmonies. There is no musical style beyond their range. How good are they? Ask Roger Waters of Pink Floyd—the guys just finished touring with him as his backing vocalists for The Wall Live tour. Venice will bring a hugely diverse playlist to Rock in the Park!
Friday, March 21: A Very Special Performer with guest Michael Tiernan
We’re dying to tell you who’s going to close out the Rock in the Park series, but we can’t announce his name just yet. Trust us … it’s worth the wait. You know him, you love him, he’ll rock you. Stay tuned. We’ll be able to share the secret in February.
Michael Tiernan opens each show. He hung with monks deep in desert monasteries and lived in the Vatican, but he left the seminary for the higher calling of music, and has since racked up several national and international awards for his songwriting. His acoustic blend has a relaxed vibe mixed with a big city sound. Deep in meaning, yet playful in attitude, Michael’s music takes you from the temple to the tavern and from the beach to downtown.

Parking and Times

All performances will be held at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. Ample FREE parking in the lot at Space Theater Way at Park Blvd. Doors open at 7 p.m. Michael Tiernan performs at 7:30 p.m. Headliners perform at approximately 8:20 p.m. Come early, get your hands on fun science exhibits, grab a bite to eat, get a beverage and we will rock you!
